Why LVC?
Established out of a desire to build community and celebrate tenor and bass choral repertoire, Winnipeg’s Low Voice Collective (LVC) is an opportunity to explore our low-resonating voices! Inspired by the success of internationally acclaimed Gay Men’s Choruses, the LVC was developed with an inclusive approach to low-voice music making. No matter your musical ability or experience, and no matter your gender identity, if you sing as a tenor or bass, then you are welcome to join the LVC.
history
The roots of the queer tenor and bass choral movement can be traced back to the somber yet defiant streets of San Francisco in 1978, where the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus—comprising over 100 members—delivered their first public performance during a vigil for the slain supervisor Harvey Milk. This powerful act of musical activism ignited a global singing movement, sparking the formation of similar ensembles in New York, Washington, Boston, and London, and paved the way for the vibrant 2SLGBTQIA+ choral community that flourishes today. Inspired by this legacy of "singing out" and driven by the intersection of his own musical passions and cultural identity, Aaron Hutton founded the Low Voice Collective, a modern ensemble dedicated to carrying forth that historic mission of visibility, community, and artistic excellence for a new generation of voices.
schedule
The Low Voice Collective is currently a project-based choir, which means scheduling is generally light but busier when a project or concert is on the horizon.
The Low Voice Lineup
Tenor 1
The "glitter" of the choir. They are the highest voice in the mix; the brightest and most vibrant—pure sunlight and brilliant high-energy.
Tenor 2
The “warmth” of the melody while keeping the energy high. They offer a friendly, glowing tone that fills the space between the heights and the middle.
BARITONE
The “soulful heart” blending the highs and the lows. It’s their lush, velvet texture that makes the choir sound rich and regal—the waves on the shore.
BasS
The solid “foundation” of the group, deep, resonant, and cool. It’s the floor everything else stands on—solid as the ocean and just as powerful.
